COPD is a commonly diagnosed, generally progressive\u00a0disease in which traditional drug therapy response\u00a0is highly variable and medication changes\u00a0may be frequent. Ascorbic acid has been suggested\u00a0to be useful in different conditions but has not been\u00a0evaluated in COPD. A patented calcium ascorbate\u00a0product [Ester-C, Inter-Cal Corp., 533 Madison Ave., Prescott, AZ
\n85301] has been described to have superior absorption\u00a0in some species. Six horses with moderate to\u00a0severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease treated\u00a0with a calcium ascorbate supplement in place of\u00a0other therapy responded with good to excellent response\u00a0within 45 days of starting treatment. Although\u00a0the sample size is small, the consistent\u00a0response is encouraging. Although further study,\u00a0including blinded trials, is needed, the availability of\u00a0an oral, easily administered, and safe supplement to\u00a0help alleviate the crippling symptoms of COPD can\u00a0be useful to the practitioner in the control of this\u00a0disease.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n…was administered to each horse at a dose level that provided the ascorbic acid equivalent of 19.8\u201329.7 g daily; the dose as given either once daily or divided twice daily.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
